KDP Printing Costs & Minimum List Price
Binding, trim size, page count, ink, and paper affect what KDP charges to print your book. Compare three 250-page examples, then check the lowest list price our worksheet estimates for your own specifications.
The applicable 50% or 60% royalty tier depends on the list price, so division alone may not give a valid minimum. In the US, black-ink paperbacks of 24–110 pages have a fixed printing fee instead of a per-page charge.
1. What changes when you change the book?
These examples keep the marketplace, length, ink, and paper the same: Amazon.com marketplace, 250 pages, black ink on white paper.
The figures are estimates from Amazon's published fee tables and this worksheet's rule snapshot 2026-09-10.preview.2. Confirm your final price in KDP for the book you submit.

When production cost rises to $5.25 on the 8.5 × 11 in book, dividing $5.25 by 60% yields $8.75. That price falls in the 50% royalty tier:
- On Amazon.com, list prices below $9.99 qualify only for the 50% royalty tier.
- At $8.75, the 50% share is $4.375. Subtracting the $5.25 printing cost would leave -$0.875 per copy, below the non-negative royalty required for this price floor.
- Dividing by 50% gives $10.50, but that price crosses the $9.99 threshold into the 60% tier.
- At $9.99, the 60% rate applies. $9.99 × 60% − $5.25 leaves about $0.74 per sale before other costs.
Our worksheet therefore estimates $9.99 as the lowest valid list price for this example under the standard Amazon.com royalty tiers.
2. Physical Specifications That Determine Printing Costs
The fee table changes with the book and marketplace:
Trim Size and the Regular vs Large Threshold
Amazon classifies trim sizes into Regular Trim and Large Trim categories based on dimensions:
- Regular Trim: Width up to 6.12 inches and height up to 9.0 inches. In the US, regular black-ink paperbacks cost $0.012 per page in the 250-page example.
- Large Trim: Any book exceeding 6.12 inches in width or 9.0 inches in height. In the US, large black-ink paperbacks cost $0.017 per page in this example. Formats like 7 × 10, 8 × 10, and 8.5 × 11 inches belong to Large Trim.

Page Count & Short-Book Fixed Costs
For black-ink paperbacks, the US fee table changes at 110 pages:
- Short books (24–110 pages in the US): Charged only a fixed fee with no per-page charge. In Australia, this fixed-fee range spans 24–108 pages.
- Standard books (above 110 pages in the US): The US examples above use a $1.00 fixed fee plus the per-page rate multiplied by page count.
Interior Ink and Paper Color
Ink and paper options can change the fee table. Check the combination available for your binding and marketplace.
For comparison, our US 250-page, 6 × 9 in black-ink paperback estimate on groundwood paper is $3.85 to print, with a $7.70 minimum list price.
Hardcover Binding Constraints and Cover Hand-off
Case laminate hardcover has a higher fixed fee ($5.65 for this Amazon.com example) and different available options:
- Hardcover requires between 75 and 550 pages.
- Standard Color and Groundwood paper are not supported.
- Hardcover cannot be sold through the Amazon Canada (amazon.ca), Australia (amazon.com.au), or Japan (amazon.co.jp) marketplaces.

3. Multi-Marketplace Currency Rules
Our worksheet uses each marketplace's fee table and currency. It does not convert the US estimate with an exchange rate.
For the same 250-page regular black-and-white paperback:
- Amazon.com (United States): $1.00 base + 250 × $0.012 = $4.00 USD (minimum list price: $8.00 USD).
- Amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom): £3.35 GBP printing cost (estimated minimum: £6.70 GBP).
- Amazon.de (Germany / Eurozone): €3.75 EUR printing cost (estimated minimum: €7.50 EUR).

4. Price Floor vs. Commercial Break-Even
The estimated minimum covers the printing fee in the worksheet's standard royalty calculation. It does not tell you whether the book will earn a profit.
The minimum price does not account for:
- Amazon Sponsored Products ad spend (CPC and conversion rate).
- Cover design, editing, and interior layout costs.
- Proof copies, shipping, and external marketing expenses.
