Paperback Pricing & Royalties

How KDP Print Royalties Work

See how list price, royalty rate, and printing cost determine a paperback royalty. One US example shows why pricing the same book at $9.98 or $9.99 changes the result by $1.00.

Core Royalty Formula (Standard Distribution)
Royalty = (Royalty Rate × List Price) − Printing Cost

Amazon calculates royalties per sale on print editions before subtracting your optional advertising expenses. The list price is the pre-tax retail price you specify in KDP.

1. The Four-Step Royalty Calculation

Print books use a different calculation from Kindle eBooks. For each paperback or hardcover sale through an Amazon marketplace:

  1. Define physical book specifications: Choose binding (paperback or hardcover), trim size, interior ink (black, standard color, or premium color), paper type (white or cream), and total page count.
  2. Identify the marketplace and royalty rate: For direct Amazon marketplace distribution, the royalty rate is either 50% or 60% based on your list price relative to the marketplace threshold ($9.99 on Amazon.com).
  3. Calculate the fixed and variable printing cost: A base fixed fee is combined with a per-page rate from Amazon's manufacturing tables.
  4. Deduct printing costs from gross rate earnings: Subtract the total printing cost from your share of the list price to estimate the royalty before any advertising expense.

2. The One-Cent Price Threshold: $9.98 vs $9.99

One of the most consequential quirks in KDP pricing occurs at the boundary between the 50% and 60% royalty tiers. On Amazon.com, any paperback priced below $9.99 falls into the 50% rate, while books priced at $9.99 or higher earn 60%.

Consider a standard US trade book: 6 × 9 inches, 250 pages, black ink on white paper, paperback. Its estimated printing cost is $4.00 ($1.00 base + 250 × $0.012).

$9.9960%$1.99

For this same book, moving the list price from $9.98 to $9.99 raises the estimated royalty from $0.99 to $1.99 per sale. Check the rate threshold for the marketplace where you list your own book.

The threshold differs by marketplace: Amazon.co.uk moves to 60% at £7.99, while Amazon.ca does so at CAD 13.99. Check the official marketplace table before using a price from another country.

3. Inside the $4.00 Printing Cost Breakdown

The $4.00 estimate for this 250-page example follows Amazon's paperback printing table:

$1.00 (Fixed Cost) + (250 pages × $0.012 per page) = $4.00

Several physical attributes determine whether these base figures apply:

  • Trim Size Category (Regular vs Large): In the US marketplace, trim sizes up to 6.12 inches wide and 9.0 inches high are classified as Regular Trim ($0.012/page). Books exceeding either dimension are classified as Large Trim and incur a higher per-page cost ($0.017/page). Note that while Amazon's general overview article briefly asserts that trim size does not affect costs, Amazon's official detailed cost tables explicitly price regular and large trims differently.
  • Page Count: In the US store, black-ink books between 24 and 110 pages have a fixed cost without a per-page charge. Above that short-book range, the fixed base plus per-page formula applies.
  • Paper and Ink Type: For black-and-white interiors, white and cream paper carry identical printing costs. However, switching to standard color or premium color substantially increases both the base fee and per-page rates.

4. Royalty, Price Floor, and Advertising Break-Even

When evaluating a publishing plan, authors frequently encounter three distinct monetary figures that must not be conflated:

The Minimum Price Floor ($8.00)

To ensure that sales proceeds always cover physical printing, KDP enforces a minimum list price calculated as:

Minimum List Price = Printing Cost ÷ 50% = $4.00 ÷ 0.50 = $8.00

If an author attempts to list this 250-page book at $7.99, the sale would generate a net loss, and KDP's title setup interface will reject the price.

The Official KDP Print Royalty ($4.99 at $14.99)

At a tax-exclusive list price of $14.99, the 60% share is $8.994 before rounding. After subtracting the $4.00 print cost, this worksheet displays an estimated $4.99 royalty per sale, before optional advertising costs.

Advertising Break-Even (ACoS and Net After Ads)

If you run Amazon Sponsored Products advertising, ad spend is an operational expense incurred independently by the author. In our benchmark scenario:

  • Cost Per Click (CPC): $0.45
  • Conversion Rate (CVR): 10% (1 order per 10 clicks)
  • Ad Cost Per Sale (CPA): $0.45 ÷ 10% = $4.50
  • Royalty after assumed ad cost per sale: $4.99 − $4.50 = $0.49
  • Break-Even ACoS: 33.32% (calculated as unrounded royalty $4.994 ÷ $14.99 × 100)
  • Break-Even CPC: $0.49 (the maximum click cost sustainable without incurring a loss at 10% CVR)

This after-ads estimate excludes any other business costs. It is not a KDP royalty: advertising charges are separate from the royalties shown in KDP title reports.

Expanded Distribution Notice

Amazon offers an optional Expanded Distribution channel for eligible paperbacks, which pays a flat 40% royalty rate minus print costs for sales through bookstores and libraries. This toolkit is intentionally dedicated to direct Amazon store sales and does not simulate Expanded Distribution figures.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't the paperback royalty rate always 60%?

Amazon's published table assigns 50% below the local marketplace threshold and 60% at or above it. The US threshold is $9.99. Printing cost is then subtracted under either rate; the reason for Amazon's policy is not part of this calculation.

Do I have to pay printing costs upfront?

No upfront printing payment is required for a standard print-on-demand sale. KDP subtracts the applicable print cost when calculating your royalty. Optional advertising spending is separate.

Does hardcover use the exact same formula?

Hardcover uses the same rate-times-price-minus-print-cost structure, but its printing table and supported options differ. Check Amazon's Hardcover Royalty Terms and Hardcover Printing Costs .

Can I use these calculations to upload my cover directly?

No. This worksheet provides dimensions for planning, not an upload-ready cover file or publication approval. Use Amazon's official cover calculator and template to prepare and check the final file.
